Elizabeth Kim

National Lawyers Guild Sacramento Chaper President
Elizabeth Kim is the current president of National Lawyers Guild Sacramento Chapter. She was first elected to the board in 2016 and has been a member and legal observer since 2011.
Elizabeth holds many roles in various areas of government. Elizabeth is a legal recruiting consultant at the California Department of Justice, a professor of social justice studies at American River College, and is also a political consultant and campaign manager. She is also a court translator in the administrative courts.

Previously, Elizabeth was also an education policy advisor to Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones from 2011-2018.  Prior to that position, she has worked for various legislators at the Capitol for the past 15 years on issues of education, criminal justice reform, women and children’s rights, and all other issues that impact communities of color and the poor. She also gained experience in criminal defense working at the Public Defender’s Office from 2015-2016, and for various private law firms ranging in issues from employment law, family law, criminal defense, administrative law, and intellectual property law.

Elizabeth has been an avid fighter for children’s rights since becoming an educator at the young age of 18, advocating for foster children through the Sacramento Court-Appointed Special Advocates and has focused on education issues throughout her public service career. Elizabeth also frequently lectures on human trafficking and has appeared on panels throughout the state.
Prior to law school and her career at the Capitol, Elizabeth studied photography and film-making at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. She was also arrested with possession of a small amount of cannabis in 2004 and was convicted of a felony intent to sell and served 6 months at Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas, California. This incident changed her path from art school and fueled her passion for social justice and advocacy for all those who are voiceless.

In 2016, Elizabeth combined her love for arts, film, law and policy and founded Organized Voices, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a platform to speak out against injustices in the community. She has also worked with various filmmakers and wrote screenplays for REVOLT TV, Blackout for Human Rights, and the producers of the movie, Fruitvale Station.  She has also filmed, wrote and produced for various indie documentaries on homelessness, Know Your Rights trainings, and the Black Panther movement.

Elizabeth earned her Juris Doctor from McGeorge School of Law in 2015, her Bachelor of Arts in Communication and History from the University of California, Davis in 2009, and her Associate of Arts from American River College in 2008. She also holds certificates in Mediation, Capitol Lawyering and Public Policy, and a Conflict Resolution Certificate from Hebrew University, where she studied in Jerusalem and Palestine. Her written work on political corruption has been published with McGeorge School of Law (Volume 46) and she often writes and provides presentations on issues of social justice and inequality throughout the country.

She is currently working on publishing her social justice textbook, “Standing on the Frontlines” and has launched her podcast on June 14th, 2020.
